DUTIES:
Overview:
The Registered Nurse on the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit manages and directs nursing care activities of male and female Veterans with a variety of mental health disorders, including, but not limited to: mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders and detoxification, psychotic disorders, cognitive disorders, brain injury, mild dementia, personality disorders and suicidal/ho! micidal ideation, along with any co-existing medical disorders. The nurse collaborates with the multidisciplinary treatment team and coordinates/facilitates care to achieve optimal patient outcomes within the therapeutic environment. The nurse will also be oriented to provide cross-coverage on the Substance Abuse Residential Treatment Program.
The staff nurse on inpatient psychiatry is responsible for maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment on the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, and is directly accountable to the Nurse Manager.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Good documentation and organizational skills to enable completion of work.
- The ability to work effectively as a team member and to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitor and members of the interdisciplinary team.
- The ability to lead psycho-educational and other therapeutic groups.
- The ability to identify needs for special precau! tions and to manage disruptive behavior.
- Delivers direct patie! nt care: assesses patients physical, psychosocial and/or emotional needs (including addressing age, developmental and cultural needs), and communicates the information to the multidisciplinary team, provides assistance with activities of daily living as needed, provides patient and family teaching/education.
- Uses CPRS/VISTA to document the nursing process including Admission, Discharge and Transfer notes, ongoing patient re-assessments, seclusion and restraint notes, suicide precaution notes, special incident reporting, vital sign reporting, etc. Transcribes/verifies provider orders according to policy. Uses CPRS/VISTA and Outlook for timekeeping and communication.
- Maintains compliance with information security policies and procedures.
- Administers medications as assigned; serves as a resource person for knowledge of medication uses, side effects, and dosage; checks for proper medication order; documents medications according to policy.
- Pe! rforms procedures within his/her scope of practice and unit-based competencies (Procedure Grid in Procedure Manual).
- Conducts Health Education Classes, Community Meetings, and Focus Group Therapy.
- Is proactive in identifying potential crisis situations and responds appropriately in emergency situations.
- Acts as a preceptor/mentor to newer staff and/or students.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency
and
accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:! The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The ! Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that
qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of
study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for
the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005,

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Nurse I Level I! - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing o! r meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a! related field with no experience.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
Preferred Experience:
A BSN with one year of recent experience as a psychiatric RN.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

Physical Requirements:
This position involves sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, and lifting.
It requires assisting patients with activities of daily living, ambulating patients, turning or repositioning patients, assisting with transferring patients to wheelchairs/stretchers, and transporting them to other departments or facilities. Mechanical devices are available and are required to be used for heavy or difficult-to-lift patients.
The work may involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds, going up and down flights of stairs and walking long distances.
The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care.
The position requires the nurse to be able to perform Basic Life Support skills, skills required in the Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior to protect him/hersel! f from physically abusive patients, and the ability to restrain and/or seclude confused or agitated patients.
