DUTIES:
The George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah seeks a physician specializing in Psychiatry.

DUTIES: The outpatient psychiatrist functions as a physician member of an interdisciplinary team consisting of mid-level providers, therapists, case managers and addiction therapists. The incumbent conducts psychiatric evaluations, develops treatment plans, and implements treatment, and provides clinical management for a variety of complex mental health conditions, including, but not limited to: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and other related conditions. Treatment planning focuses on utilization of pharmacological interventions as well as appropriate referral for ! additional studies and/or for adjunctive psychosocial interventions. Treatment planning also involves informing patients of risks, benefits, and alternative treatments and answering all questions. Incumbent will provide consultation to veteransÂ' families/caregivers as well as primary care providers, mid-level mental health providers and other professional staff on the assessment, education, and treatment of veterans with complex clinical problems. Position requires a working knowledge of advanced psychopharmacology and substance abuse treatment. In collaboration with the team, incumbent selects appropriate treatment from a variety of resources and clinical approaches including non-direct and cognitive behavioral therapy, behavior modification, insight oriented methods, family therapy, relaxation training, medication management, etc. Ongoing treatment involves monitoring for effectiveness and adverse effects with the goal of full symptom remission. Incumbent will also suppo! rt quality improvement initiatives and will attend the monthly Outpatie! nt Psychiatry Meeting and Psychiatry Peer Review Meeting.

WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 8 - 4:30 p.m.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).

b. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(2) Schools of osteo! pathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted license.

(4) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required.

c. Licensure and Registration. Must have a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Must be board-certified or board eligible in medicine or surgery. If board-eligible, must become board certified within one year of being hired.

d. English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

e. Physical Standards. Must pass a pre-employmen! t physical examination.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS

:

! Must have demonstrated recognized professional attainment such as:

1. Past or present faculty appointment in an approved medical school, or

2. Completion of an accredited residency in the specialty area to which the individual is being assigned or in a related area, or

3. Current eligibility to sit for the board certification examination in the specialty area to which the individual is being assigned or in a related area, or

4. Comparable achievements in clinical, educational, administrative or research activities.

Salary is commensurate with Education and Experience as determined by the Professional Standards Board.
