JOB SUMMARY

At Houston Methodist, the Research Scientist position is responsible for engaging in research or research-related services to the institution, e.g. direction of research core facilities. The position is limited to one that is primarily supportive in nature which includes scientists who are not on an independent path in terms of external grant funding and publications, and individuals whose job is to serve and support Houston Methodist. The expectation for faculty Research Scientist position on the Research Track is that full salary support must be maintained by the supervising faculty member(s) which can be constituted from extramural funding, philanthropic funding, start up support, or any combination thereof.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

PEOPLE - 20%

  • Under the direction of a Principle Investigator (PI), coordinates and provides technical direction to the work activities of research staff engaged in projects. (EF)
  • Performs procedures which require a highly developed technical skill. (EF)
  • Conducts self in a manner that is congruent with cultural diversity, equity and inclusion principles. Contributes towards improvement of department scores for employee engagement, i.e. peer-to-peer accountability. (EF)

SERVICE - 25%

  • Designs, develops, or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results. (EF)
  • Establishes procedures to be applied for projects. (EF)
  • Participates in writing manuscripts and publications. (EF)

QUALITY/SAFETY - 25%

  • Compiles, writes, and submits project results to the principle investigator. (EF)
  • Designs, develops, or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results. (EF)
  • Analyzes data and interprets data. (EF)
  • Defines problems and possible solutions as dictated by the research project. (EF)

FINANCE - 20%

  • Participates in grant writing the specific grant(s). (EF)
  • Utilizes resources with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed. (EF)

GROWTH/INNOVATION - 10%

  • Reviews scientific literature. (EF)
  • Seeks opportunities to identify self-development needs and takes appropriate action. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an on-going basis. (EF)

o Demonstrated knowledge of biomedical research
